It is extremely difficult
to categorize Bill Frisell's music. Typically he is pigeon-holed
as being a jazz guitar player, yet upon hearing Frisell,
most would agree that if it is necessary to be "labelled"
at all, a new name is warranted to describe this unique
musical voice. In many ways, Frisell's sound is reminiscent
of a pedal steel guitar. However, his music includes characteristics
of rock, country, and bluegrass, among various other styles.
He has played with a wide variety of musicians including
John Scofield, Elvis Costello, Ginger Baker, Suzanne Vega,
Bono, Brian Eno, and Norah Jones, to name just a few. Bill
Frisell is one of those musicians who is always pushing
the envelope and breaking down musical barriers. In recent
years, Bill has been the musical director of the "Century
of Song"
series of programs at the Ruhr Triennale Arts festival
in Germany. Lee Townsend of Songline
/ Tone Field Productions produced the series and Frisell
and Townsend invite guest songwriters, interpreters and
performers to collaborate with Bill.
